Joe New's story

“I’m really loving my apprenticeship, it’s just got better and better. If you can find an apprenticeship in something you’d like to do, it’s definitely worth it.”

Joe New is currently undertaking a teaching assistant apprenticeship in a school and knows the practical experiences he’s gaining will help him move into teaching professionally in the future.

“I chose an apprenticeship as a way of getting experience of working in a school. I want to go to university to become a qualified teacher – the apprenticeship route seemed a good way to go about it. I was really excited to start my apprenticeship.

“My apprenticeship has helped me to become more confident in teaching, my written work and interacting with pupils.

“I start at 8am each day. My first jobs involve getting everything ready for the day, marking and setting up activities. The children arrive by 9am. We start the day with maths – I help the lower groups and deliver focus groups and one-to-one sessions. I take a small group of 11 students in the morning and practise teaching. After lunch I take the class for a P.E. lesson. The students leave at around 3.30pm and my day finishes at about 4pm after tidying up. I also deliver general classroom support.

“Every day is different, which makes it enjoyable and interesting. I am always busy and learning new skills. Training within a working environment has prepared me for the years ahead, to cope with the pressure and tasks that need doing. Earning a wage has helped me to budget and manage my money.

“I’m enjoying the hands-on experience – I’m not just sat studying in a classroom. If I’d studied the same kind of qualification at university, there’d be a lot more academic study. Thanks to my apprenticeship I am getting real work experience and a qualification.

“After my apprenticeship I’m hoping to move on to university to train to become a qualified teacher. I’m starting a P.E. course next year to enable me to move to teach in a secondary school.

“I’m really loving my apprenticeship, it’s just got better and better. If you can find an apprenticeship in something you’d like to do, it’s definitely worth it.”
