The Appointment

This company is a start-up, driven by its founder who half way through a PHd decided to pursue his ambition of starting his own company, based around an innovative tool set for the construction industry. HICI LTD design, develop and manufacture high quality, innovative hand tools under the TRIGJIG brand. HICI distribute to customers in Europe, North America, Australia and here in the UK both direct and via retailers such as Screwfix.

The Post -

As an apprentice at HICI you will benefit from 1 on 1 instruction and guidance from our engineer. You will be an integral part of the company and as such, will be involved in every aspect of the design, development and manufacturing processes. The role is dynamic and hands-on. From concept to final production you will have an opportunity to work with the Design & Production Engineer on the digital side of engineering; i.e. 3D design software, CAD-CAM interfaces, CNC programming as well as machining practices using our CNC machinery. By completion you will be able to do all of the following:

  • Using 3D software to design simple prototypes and parts to be manufactured.
  • Selecting tooling and creating toolpaths for the CNC Vertical Machining Centre (VMC).
  • Setting up, running and machining prototype and production parts on the CNC VMCs, CNC press brake, CNC laser cutter, CNC router and 3D printer.
  • Altering/adapting machining programmes, tool paths, changing and setting up tools depending on the grade of material and part.
  • Selecting suitable material stock and setting up work pieces using specified work holding methods.
  • Understanding material properties and working with the team to decide which materials to use for specific parts.
  • Working to, creating and adapting workflows / machining processes to improve production.
  • Testing prototype and production parts to specific tolerances.
  • Assembling finished machined parts and applying strict quality control standards to each completed product.

A large part of our business is designing and creating prototypes ready for production. It involves lots of creativity and research and this ensures each project is interesting and challenging. While some days are spent churning out short-run production parts, these days are always preceded by the excitement and variety of the design and prototyping stages. This is the perfect position for the apprentice with ingenuity and a genuine interest in CNC machining and product design/manufacturing.
